WHAT'S ON TAP
Riding a four-game win streak, the Chargers close out back-to-back games on the road with a trip to the Granite State to take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Saturday afternoon. Tip off from the FPU Fieldhouse is set for 1:40 p.m.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Looking to extend its longest win streak for the season, currently at four-straight, New Haven needs to continue to rely on a defense that is holding opponents to just 59.2 points per game, while keeping confidence in its shooting where it is currently 17th in NCAA Division II with its 45.3 percent from the field. Leading the way is Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who is averaging 16.9 points per game, fourth in the NE10, including a career-high 30 points in the season opener against Georgian Court. Her co-captain Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has both offense and defense on her mind as she is second on the team averaging 13.3 ppg, while one of two players in the NE10 who is averaging a double double as she is pulling down 10.1 rebounds per outing, second best in the NE10. In addition, Deshaies leads all NE10 players and is sixth in the nation with her 64% shooting percentage (101-of-159) with all of her points coming from inside the three-point arc. Rounding out the leading scorers for the Blue and Gold is senior point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who is averaging 9.6 ppg, while leading the team with 78 assists, with her 4.9 assists per game average second best in the conference.
SCOUTING FRANKLIN PIERCE
The Ravens struggled to find their way when facing conference leading Assumption last time out, dropping their fourth-straight decision by a score of 57-24. For the season, the Ravens are being outscored by just shy of nine points per game, shooting 39 percent on the year, including 28 percent from beyond the arc. Individually, a pair of Ravens are leading the scoring efforts with Ines Gimenez-Monserrat leading the team with 14.2 points per game followed by Sara Macary at 10.2 ppg. Gimenez-Monserrat also leads the team with 58 assists, while Kenzie Sirowich is the leading rebounder with her average of 5.9 per game, which goes along with 8.4 ppg.
SERIES HISTORY vs THE RAVENS
·        New Haven and Franklin Pierce meet for the 54th time in the history of the two programs on Saturday
·        The Ravens hold a 30-23 record in the previous 53 games, however the Chargers have won eight of the last 10 games.
·        New Haven opened up the series on fire, winning the first eight meetings against the Ravens, with the series dating back to the 1981-82 season.
·        With a win earlier this season in West Haven, the Chargers have won three straight against the Ravens.
THE FIRST TIME VS FRANKLIN PIERCE
Shooting 50% or better for the second time on the season, including an impressive 9-of-11 in the fourth quarter alone, the Chargers outscored their third opponent by 20+, taking a 79-51 win over the Ravens. Three Chargers finished in double figures, led by graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who led all players in the game with 22 points, shooting 9-of-20 overall, including 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) and Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) followed with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Deshaies and senior Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) each finished with a team-best seven rebounds as the Chargers held a 35-29 advantage on the boards.
SLAYING THE DRAGON
New Haven may have entered the Dana Center as the underdog in its conference match-up against NE10 leading Bentley, a team that has garnered regional and national attention from those voting in weekly polls, but the Chargers proved that they are not a team to take lightly. It wasn't a fluke that New Haven came away with the buzzer-beating victory over the Falcons as they led for nearly 25 of the 40 minutes in the game. Overall, the contest featured 12 lead changes and eight ties, but the 51-49 final score is all that mattered as the Chargers held a Bentley team that averaged 14 points more than their opponents to a season-low 49 points and limited their leading scorers, who average more than 30 points per game combined, to just 16 total points among the top-three scorers.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Chargers return home for their longest homestand of the season when they play three-straight, beginning with a visit from the Saint Rose Golden Knights to open up the month of February. Tipoff in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, with all of the action available live on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
