THE LEAD
Looking to close out the homestand with back-to-back wins, the New Haven men's basketball team welcome Saint Michael's to Charger Gymnasium as they look to avenge a season-opening loss to the Purple Knights back on November 16. Opening tip in the NE10 battle is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
In the midst of an 11-game NE10 stretch, New Haven relies heavily on its starting five who are all averaging more than 30 minutes per game, with three of the five averaging in double figures and the five combined providing 88% of the total scoring (1,264-of-1,440 total points). Leading the team individually is graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) who has scored in double figures in all but one game this season, moving into the lead with his 15.1 ppg average. In addition, Lane leads the team with 76 assists and 32 steals. Following Lane is senior transfer Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who is averaging 14.6 ppg. Junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) rounds out the top three with a 12.6 ppg average, including leading the team from beyond the arc with 55 three pointers. Rounding out the starting five is Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) and Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) who average 9.3 and 7.9 ppg, respectively. Among the five, Majak leads the team and the NE10 with an impressive 65.7 percent (69-of-105) shooting from the field, while Lane is also among the best in the league at 54.5 percent (116-of-213). Majak is also the NE10's leading shot blocker with 62 stuffed attempts, which also ranks him third nationally in total blocks.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
Looking to break a three-game slide, Saint Michael's enters Tuesday night with a 10-14 overall record and a 4-12 record in the Northeast-10. For the season, the Purple Knights are averaging 66.5 points per game while their opponents are slightly better at 68.5 ppg. Individually, Saint Michael's is led by four players all averaging in double figures with Romar Reid leading the way at 10.5 ppg. CJ Crews and Alan Brzezinsky follow at 10.1 ppg, while Joel Kabimba rounds out the group at 10 ppg. The Purple Knights are a team who can hurt you from outside the arc, as they enter Tuesday night leading all NE10 teams with 207 three point field goals.
SERIES HISTORY vs THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
·        New Haven and Saint Michael's meet for the 27th time in the history of the two programs.
·        Despite a loss in the first meeting this season, New Haven holds a 14-12 lead in the previous 26 meetings.
·        The win earlier this year snapped a series of four-straight wins for New Haven, who extended beyond that had won nine of the previous 11 heading into this season.
EARLIER THIS SEASON VS THE PURPLE KNIGHTS
Opening its season with its first NE10 game of the season, the Chargers rebounded from 10 points down in the second half to pull within one on a three pointer with nine seconds left and had the ball with six seconds left but came up empty, dropping the season-opener 75-74 at Saint Michael's. Leading the Chargers on the night was a pair of 20-point performances from Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) and Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton). Both finished with exactly 20 points as each put up eight field goals. Thomas had four three pointers among his eight buckets, while Perry added four points at the free throw line where he was 4-of-5. Combined, the pair shot 16-of-34 from the field, while as a team the Charger shot exactly 50 percent, making 30-of-60 attempts, including five three pointers. Joining Thomas and Perry in double digits was graduate point guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) who each put up 10 points. Lane finished with three buckets, while going a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Majak was 5-of-7 from the floor overall, while pulling down seven boards.
