THE LEAD
For the third time in the last four seasons, the New Haven men's basketball team is playing for a Northeast-10 Conference Championship and this time around it will be a rematch as the Chargers take on second seeded Saint Anselm, the same opponent they played in 2020. Due to a forecast of snow in Manchester, tipoff in the championship game is slated for 6:00 p.m. with all of the action available on NE10 NOW.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
Heading into the NE10 title game, New Haven continues to rely heavily on its starting five who are all averaging more 29+ minutes per game, with three of the five averaging in double figures in the scoring column and the five combined providing 86% of the total scoring (1,700-of-1,971 total points). Leading the team individually is transfer guard Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who has scored 20+ in eight games this season and is averaging 14.8 ppg. Among his eight 20+ performance is a trio of games where he hit his career-high of 24. Graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) follows him with four 20+ games on the season, for an average to 14.8 ppg, shooting 52.8 percent (158-299) for the season. In addition, Lane leads the team with 111 assists and 43 steals. Junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) rounds out the top three with a 13.0 ppg average, including leading the team from beyond the arc with 73 three pointers. Rounding out the starting five is Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) and Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) who average 9.6 and 7.0 ppg, respectively. Among the five, Majak leads the team and the NE10 with an impressive 61.7 percent (82-of-133) shooting from the field. Majak is also the NE10's leading rebounder (11.5 per game) and shot blocker with 86 stuffed attempts, which also rank him third nationally in both rebounding and total blocks.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
After winnings its regular season finale to earn the second seed in the NE10 playoffs, the Saint Anselm Hawks advances through the quarter and semifinals, earning hosting rights as they play for their conference best 10th NE10 Championship on Saturday. For the season, the Hawks are averaging 75.5 points per game which is the second highest in the conference, however on the flip side they are surrendering 71.2 ppg which is fourth worst in the league. Individually, the Hawks starting five are all averaging 10+ ppg more with Tyler Arbuckle leading all scorers with his 18.1 ppg average which is the second highest in the NE10. One of the biggest threats the Hawks provide is an outside shooting barrage where their 271 three pointers is best in the conference and they lead all NE10 teams with their .402 average from long range. The Hawks top three scorers are their biggest three point threats with Arbuckle second on the team with 59 three's. Mile Tention leads the team with 69 long range buckets, while Owen McGlashan is third with 52 buckets from outside the arc.
SERIES HISTORY vs SAINT ANSELM
·        New Haven and Saint Anselm meet for the 33rd time in the history of the two programs.
·        Saint Anselm holds a 22-10 advantage in the previous 32 games, including two of three meetings last season
·        Saint Anselm opened up the series winning the first three meetings and extended that to 10 of the first 14 matchups.
·        The teams split the home and home series during the regular season this year with each winning on the others home court.
NE10 TOURNAMENT HISTORY
New Haven makes its 10th appearance in the NE10 Championship since joining the league for the 2008-09 season. This season also represents the sixth straight appearance for the Blue and Gold. Overall, the Chargers hold an 0-2 record in the championship game, advancing to the title game in 2014 and then in back-to-back seasons - 2019 and 2020. Overall, New Haven and Saint Anselm have met three times in NE10 postseason play, with the Hawks holding a 2-1 advantage in those meetings.
EARLIER THIS SEASON VS THE HAWKS
New Haven and Saint Anselm split the regular season home-and-home series with each team winning on the others home court. The first meeting came in Manchester with New Haven scoring a 72-63 victory, while the Hawks earned the win in West Haven by a single point, 65-64. Overall in those two games, it was Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) who led the Chargers as he averaged 21.5 points, shooting 62.1 percent (18-of-29), while dishing out 10 assists and picking off seven steals. Lane finished the road game with 20 points, while closing out the home game with a season-high 23 points. Following him in leading the Chargers was junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who averaged 18.5 points and Victory Olawoye who added 14.5 ppg. The three-point threat of the Hawks was a big part of the first two meetings with Saint Anselm converting 20 attempts from outside the arc, with those coming among their 51 total field goals.
MAKE ROOM ON THE SHELVES
Following a regular season that left New Haven in the hunt for a Northeast-10 Conference Championship, a trio of New Haven men's basketball players picked up the first postseason honors of the season, highlighted by senior center Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) who was a repeat selection as the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to his major award, Majak was also one of six players named to the All-Defensive team, while he was joined in All-Conference accolades by graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and senior transfer Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who earned First Team and Third Team distinction, respectively.
NEXT TIME OUT
Both New Haven and Saint Anselm will await the official announcement of the NCAA East Region bracket to determine who their next opponent will be. The East Region Championship is scheduled to begin with quarterfinal action on Saturday, March 11 with the highest seeded team serving as the host.
