DARTMOUTH, Mass. ā Running a full 8k course for the first time this season, the New Haven men's cross country team closed out the UMass Dartmouth Invitational 14th overall among a deep field that consisted of 39 total teams.
For the second straight week, New Haven was led by sophomore Mohammed Abunar (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) who posted his best time on an 8k course since joining the team last season, beating his previous best by six seconds, finishing in a time of 25:50.8 with a mile split of 5:11. Overall, Abunar finished 42nd in a field that included 303 runners.
Next in line for New Haven was junior William Brown (Middletown, Pa./Middletown Area) who finished 87th overall with his time of 26:51.3 and was followed closely by classmate Christopher Bantle (Kensington, Conn./Berlin) who finished with a final time of 26:57.3 and 94th among the full field. Bantle's time was also a personal best on an 8k course as he shaved off a minute and 22 seconds from his fastest time a season ago.
Sophomore James Cosisky followed Bantle in the Chargers top-five runners as he also took time off of his best from last season, eliminating 12 seconds from his previous best to close out the race 129th overall with a time of 27:32.4. Rounding out the first five for the Blue and Gold was junior Daniel Barbario who's pace of 5:45 miles led to a final time of 28:35.6 and an overall finish of 177th among the field.
The Chargers will take the next three weeks to prepare for their next event which will be a return to the Bay State for the James Early Invitational in Westfield, Mass. on Saturday, October 7. The race will also provide an opportunity for the Blue and Gold to run the course that will also serve as the home of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship later in October.
