Split Squad Chargers Dominate At Two Meets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. / NEW YORK, New York. – Back in action, the University of New Haven Men's and Women's Track and Field Team split up dividing and conquering as the throws took the short trip to Southern Connecticut State University to compete at the William Sutherland Invitational as the rest of the team traveled to New York to compete at the Ramapo Season Opener.

 

Coming off winning NE10 Field Athlete of the Week after her dominant performance last week at the Bryant Throws Competition, Isabelle Robinson (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) went back to work in the circle for the Women's Weight Throw. Needing just one throw to set the mark Robinson threw 13.52m on her first throw the second-best mark of the meet where she would finish at the end of the competition. Robinson followed up her second-place finish in the weight throw with a second-place finish in shot put. After an opening toss of 9.62m, Robinson improved her mark on each throw before finding her best mark on her fifth throw where she landed a mark of 11.01m claiming her second, second-place finish of the meet.

 

Carlos Rivera (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) carried the success in the circle for the Men's Weight Throw where after he fouled his first throw, Rivera bounced back and landed a mark of 15.86m. That mark climbed Rivera into third place for the meet and he would finish the meet with the third-best mark of the competition. 

 

In the sand pit, Matthew Steele (North Kingstown, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) took home third place in the men's long jump with a best mark of 6.38m. Steele landed that mark on his first jump setting the tone early and using his first jump to finish him with the third-best of the competition. Steele followed up the third-place finish with a win in the triple jump soaring to a mark of 13.78m.

 

Emily Mazzucco (East Haven, Conn./East Haven) finished third overall in the 300m dash crossing with a time of 46.68. Mazzucco continued her success at the meet jumping the third-highest height in the high jump with a final height of 1.43m.

 

Two Chargers finished second and third in the women's 800m as Elsie Kaas (Elverson, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) finished second crossing in 2:32.95 and right behind her was teammate Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township) finishing third with a time of 2:33.67.

 

Dathan Chann (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) finished third overall in the 800m finishing in 2:03.21.

 

James Comisky (Milford, Mass./Milford) took home the win in the 3000m running the the meets fastest time of 9:20.47.

 

The two men 4x400m relay teams book ended the leader board as the team of Dathan Chann (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King), Ethan Espinal Jonathan Parmelee (Piscataway, N.J./Saint Joseph), and Steven Campbell (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) took home the win running a time of 3:44.44 as fellow Chargers Jaden Sampson (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South), Andrew Trolio (Lansingburgh, N.Y./Lansingburgh), Zachary Turner, and Lucas LaBar (Budd Lake, N.J./Mount Olive) took home third running a time of 3:56.37.

 

The women's 4x400m relay team of Angelina Schilling (Sewell, N.J./Deptford Township), Bernadette Karpel (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse), Elsie Kaas (Elverson, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), and Jennifer Torres took home the win for the blue and gold crossing with a winning time of 4:36.00.

 

At the Armory in New York, Jordany Dely (Spring Valley, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) stepped right back into his stride from the end of last season as Dely opened up the 60m Hurdles prelims with the fastest time crossing in 8.27 seconds. With the fastest time of prelims Dely sat in the top seed for the finals where he once again set the pace crossing in 8.31 and winning the Hurdles for the blue and gold.

 

Gabrielle Teel (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) needed just one jump in the Women's Triple Jump, as on Teel's third jump she landed a mark of 11.24m finishing her third overall in the event.

 

Kenneth Holland (Circleville, N.Y./Pine Bush) found his stride in the sand pit as well as competing in the triple jump, Holland improved his mark on each of his jumps, after an opening mark of 13.12m. On his sixth and final jump, Holland jumped 13.89m climbing him all the way into second place for the competition.

 

The men's 4x400m relay team finished the meet with the fastest time crossing in 3:24.93.

 

With the team split the Chargers continued to dominate the leaderboards at both meets and return to action with another double meet week as the blue and gold open up on Friday January 26 in Boston competing at the John Thomas Terrier Classic before competing Saturday January 27 at the Weselyan Invitational in Middletown.
