(01-26-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2010. Consisting of former student-athletes and a coach from seven different sports, the 2010 class includes women's basketball forward Tiesha Grace, football players Mike Horton and Greg Ortman, softball coach Joe Musante, football and men's lacrosse player John Raba, baseball standout Brian Stone, and three-sport athlete Kate Whalen. The Class of 2010 will be enshrined at New Haven's 27th induction ceremony on Friday, March 26 at Race Brook Country Club in Orange, Conn.
Tiesha Grace was a member of the Charger women's basketball team from 1994-98 and is one of the program's best all-around players. A two-time All-Conference honoree, Grace is one of only two players in UNH history to record more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She was a two-year captain and ranks in the top 10 in points (1,347) and rebounds (1,047) at UNH.
Mike Horton was a member of the UNH football team from 1985-88. He started three years at quarterback for the Chargers and was twice named the All-New England Player of the Year. He holds the UNH career records for passing yards (6,836) and completions (509). During Horton's three seasons as a starter, the Chargers posted a 23-7 record.
One of Horton's favorite targets, Greg Ortman haunted opposing defenses from 1984-86. With just one season together as starters, 1986, Ortman and Horton connected 62 times for 800 yards and six touchdowns. Ortman concluded his career with over 1,600 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns. He currently ranks in the top 10 in five different statistical categories at UNH.
A member of the UNH football program from 1989-92, John Raba was part of the Chargers' first NCAA team in 1992. Also a standout men's lacrosse player from 1993-94, Raba tallied 71 points in 1994 and was named an All-American. He was a two-time All-New England football selection and was the team captain in 1992. Along with over 1,000 rushing yards, Raba amassed over 1,300 return yards and over 850 yards receiving.
The winningest softball coach in the New Haven's 34-year history, Joe Musante led the Chargers to their first ever NCAA postseason appearances in 1995 and 1996. The Chargers' skipper from 1993-98, he was named the NECC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997. Musante tallied a six-year record of 179-79 (.694 winning percentage) and coached 25 All-Conference honorees.
Brian Stone was a member of the Chargers' baseball team from 1984-86. He was a two-time All-Region selection and was honored as an All-American in 1986. Stone threw over 240 innings, including 116 2/3 during his senior year, while posting a 23-6 record through three seasons. During his tenure, the Chargers held an 81-18 overall record and made three-straight College World Series appearances. After UNH, Stone went on to be selected by Milwaukee in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft.
One of very few three-sport college student-athletes, Kate Whalen was a standout on New Haven's softball, women's tennis and women's volleyball teams. She held a 2.23 earned run average and threw 68 strikeouts on the softball field, while amassing 421 kills on the volleyball court. A member of the Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame, Whalen was named First Team All-Conference in softball and women's volleyball, while also winning the 1986 NECC women's tennis singles championship.
