Chargers Mourn the Passing of Baseball Alumnus Jim Ferguson, Hall of Fame Class of 2013

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven Department of Athletics mourns the passing of former baseball player and Hall of Famer, Jim Ferguson, who passed away on Thursday, August 2 at the age of 53.  
 
Ferguson was a key component to one of the most successful four-year runs in the history of New Haven baseball. The Chargers went 102-24 during his tenure, including four NCAA postseason appearances and three trips to the College World Series. He drove in 97 runs for Head Coach Frank "Porky" Vieira from 1983-86.
 
Following his New Haven career, Ferguson signed a professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1987, he was a member of the history-setting Salt Lake City Trappers. That summer, the team set the professional baseball record with 29 straight victories. Ferguson logged 1,175 professional at-bats in his career, rising as far as High-A with the St. Petersburg Cardinals of the Florida State League. 


The visitation will be held on Sunday, August 5 at the Guilford Funeral Home located at 115 Church Street, Guilford, CT from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. George's Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford, CT on Monday, August 6 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks for donations to be made in Jim's name to Notre Dame High School of West Haven, 1 Notre Dame Way, West Haven, CT 06516.
