WHAT'S ON TAP
New Haven will tip-off its 47th season in program history on Saturday when they host Georgian Court at Charger Gym. This will also begin the fourth season under head coach Debbie Buff as the Chargers look to rebound from a 10 win season last year.
SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Returning four of their top-five scorers from a season ago and adding four new faces to the mix, the Chargers are poised to make some noise in the Northeast-10 in 2022-23. Leading the Blue and Gold into the new campaign will be the top two leading scorers from last season graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and senior forward Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden), the Chargers two captains this season. DeBose led the Blue and Gold with a 13.0 ppg average last season, connecting on 37% of her attempts, including a team-high 35 three-point field goals. She also led the team with 65 steals and was second on the team with 56 assists and 11 blocks. Deshaies was the only Charger to average a double double a year ago as she put up 12.4 ppg and 11.1 rpg, while also leading the team with 17 blocks. Her 11.1 rebounds per contest last season was tied for the second best in the NE10, while she led all NE10 players with her 54.2 percent (141-of-260) average from the field. The inside presence also chipped in with 17 steals and 24 assists. Rounding out the four leading returners is seniors Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) and Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) who averaged 6.6 and 6.3 points per game, respectively.
SCOUTING GEORGIAN COURT
Selected to finish fourth in a poll of head coaches, Georgian Court enters the year after finishing 13-13 last season with a 10-8 record in the CACC, earning the four-seed in the CACC tournament quarterfinals. Despite that loss in the postseason, the Lions closed out the year winning seven of the final eight regular season games. A pair of Lions return to the roster who averaged double digits last season with Erica Aspajo leading the pair at 12.9 ppg while shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and a team-best 34.6 percent from beyond the arc. The second leading returner is Tian Addison who returns for her senior year after scoring 10.9 ppg in 21 games last season. The Lions also boosted their roster this season with six new players, three true freshmen (Imani Gillette, Leah Snisky and Paula Perez-Fagregas) as well as transfer A'nyah Barker from Presbyterian College.
SERIES HISTORY VS GEORGIAN COURT
New Haven and Georgian Court meet for just the third time in the history of the two programs, with the two squads earning one win apiece in the previous two meetings. The series opened in 2015 with Georgian Court taking the win on their home court 86-74. Last season, New Haven earned the early season victory 76-74, meeting on a neutral court at the Southern Connecticut Tip Off Tournament.
NEXT TIME OUT
The match-up against Georgian Court will be the only before New Haven embarks on its NE10 schedule as they will host Adelphi in a mid-week home game in just four days' time. Tip off in the NE10 opener is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium with all of the action available on the Charger Sport Network, part of NE10 NOW.
