FULL NORTHEAST-10 WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD RELEASE
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Just one meet into the season and the New Haven men's and women's track and field team is already making a splash, scoring three Northeast-10 Conference weekly accolades as announced by the league office. A pair of men's players took home honors with Jordany Dely (Spring Valley, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) named the Track Athlete of the Week and newcomer Nile Love (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) selected as the Field Athlete of the Week. Rounding out the honors was women's freshman sprinter Rayniah Mercedat (/) who was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
Leaving off where he left off from last season, Dely led the Chargers with a victory in the 60m hurdles as the Blue and Gold swept the event. The graduate student led a trio of Chargers running an 8.08 ahead of teammate Jordan Emile (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) who ran a personal record, 8.16 in second place, and Amir Phelmetto (/) who finished third ran a personal record, 8.30. He also added a third-place finish in the 400m, running a 50.23.
Love finished second overall in the long jump where he leapt 7.10m (23'3.5") on his fifth jump of the event to move him up the leaderboard. He continued the strong afternoon in the sandpit finishing third overall in the triple jump landing a mark of 14.15m (46'5.25"), also on his fifth jump.
In her first collegiate meet, Mercedat finished sixth overall in the 400m dash crossing with a final time of 59.54. She also ran the lead leg of the 4x400m relay team that finished fifth overall crossing in 4:10.
The track and field team will get right back to work this weekend as they head across town to Southern Connecticut State University's Moore Field House for the Art Kadish Elm City Challenge. The two-day event will be the final for the Blue and Gold ahead of the New Year.
