FINAL RESULTS
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a strong opening week in their return to the track that saw two Chargers earn Northeast 10 weekly awards, the University of New Haven Men's Track and Field Team returned to work as they made the short trip to Southern Connecticut State University to compete at the Art Kadish Elm City Challenge.
Joshua Stewart (Madison, Conn./Hand) started the meet off strong with a pair of personal records in the 55m dash. Stewart, who broke his previous record in the dash running a 6.47 in the preliminaries, bested that once again in the finals running a 6.37 in the finals that finished him third overall in the event.
Jordany Dely's (Spring Valley, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) dominance in the Hurdles continued as Dely set a pair of personal bests as well as the senior clocked the fastest time of the prelims crossing in 7.53, before beating that in the finals where he crossed in 7.52, to set the fastest time of the meet and set a new personal best time in the event. Dely's success added off the track as well as he jumped a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 13.96m finishing second overall in the meet
Elijah Espinal (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) continued the Chargers trend of beating personal bests, as he set a new personal best time in the 600m where he crossed with the second fastest time of the meet with a 1:28.38.
In the sand pit, a pair of Chargers found themselves atop the leader board, as Nile Love (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) continued his strong start to the season in the blue and gold, as the senior jumped a personal best mark of 7.14m to take home second place in the event. Matthew Steele (North Kingstown, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) jumped a season best mark of 6.78m on his fifth jump to finish third overall.
Declan McGrellis (Frederica, Md./Frederica) set a new personal record 3.95m in pole vault, McGrellis entered at 3.80m clearing that on his first attempt, and cleared 3.95m on his second attempt to finish third overall.
Jimmy Oreste (Jamaica, N.Y./) threw a season best in the weight throw, as the junior on his final throw landed a mark of 16.54m to finish him second overall in the event.
Jordan Emile (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) took home the win for the Chargers in the heptathlon as Emile set the standard finishing first in three events and never finishing lower than fifth. Emile finished first in the 55m dash crossing in 6.64, first in the 55m hurdles crossing in 7.73, and first in the long jump, with a mark of 6.64m. Emile overall in the heptathlon scored 4787, which is a new meet record, beating the old record set in 2023 by 215 points and takes the record away from a SCSU Owl who previously held that mark. Emile also set a provisional mark for the NCAA's with the win and broke the New Haven record in the process.
Overall the Chargers finished third in the meet scoring 86.33 points across the two day meet.
With a strong start to the season, New Haven does now take a break for the holidays as they will return to the track after first of the year, when it is the throwers that will return first when they travel to Rhode Island to compete at the Bryant Throws competition on Wednesday January 8, before the rest of the team returns to competition three days later on Saturday, January 11 when they return to SCSU to compete at the William Sutherland Invitational looking to repeat the success they had to start the season.
