Oreste and Dely Each Earn New Years first NE10 Weekly Awards

MANSFIELD, Mass. – With the first awards of the new year some things never change as the University of New Haven Men's Track and Field team took home a pair of weekly awards as announced by the Northeast10.

 

With a trio of meets to kick off the new year, New Haven's Jimmy Oreste (Jamaica, N.Y./) took home Field Athlete of the Week. Oreste set a personal record, broke the New Haven record met the NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw where he threw 18.53m and won the event at the William Sutherland Invitational. Oreste added a third place finish at the Bryant Throwers meet, along with  a second place finish at the UMASS Flagship Invitational. 

 

Jordany Dely (Spring Valley, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) took home Track Athlete of the Week, as Dely took home the win and set the pace during both the finals and prelims at the UMASS Flagship Invitational for the 60m Hurdles. Dely in the prelims, ran the fastest time of 8.17, before shaving .15 seconds off his time from the prelims, winning the finals with a time of 8.02. Dely added a second place finish at the Sutherland Invitational running a 6.46 in the 55m dash, along with a second place finish in the 55m hurdles at the Sutherland Invitational crossing in 7.72.

 

With the new year underway and three meets complete, the teams continue to work towards the Northeast 10 Championships. The busy weekends continue for both teams as they have another pair of meets as the weekend begins on Friday, January 17 when they travel to New York to compete at the Ramapo Season Opener, and Saturday the Chargers remain in Connecticut when they travel to the Coast Guard Invitation in New London, Connecticut on Saturday, January 18.
