Dave Schuler enjoyed an outstanding baseball career, both at the University of New Haven and in the major leagues.
He posted a 25-8 career record at UNH, a .757 winning percentage, and ranks among New Haven’s career leaders in several categories. His 25 wins place him 10th all-time while his 264.2 innings pitched is the 11th highest total in school history as of January 2016.
During his stay, the Chargers registered a 97-27 overall record and advanced to four NCAA tournaments. While at New Haven, he was also called upon to pitch for the United States at the 1973 World Games which were played in Central America. Â
Schuler continued his baseball career in the major leagues, signing a professional contract with the Cleveland Indians after being drafted in the 10th round in 1975. He spent several seasons in the majors, making him one of nine Chargers players to appear in a major league game.
The Framingham, Mass native pitched for the California Angels and the Atlanta Braves during his career, all in a relief role. He made his Major League debut on September 17, 1979 against the Kansas City Royals. Following his playing career, Schuler began a career as a pitching coach, which included stops in the New York Yankee and Boston Red Sox organizations. His most recent assignment (2013-14) was as the pitching coach for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the Triple A organization of the Milwaukee Brewers.Â
