Bob Alvine is being inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame with the Alumni Award of Excellence, in recognition of his many years of philanthropy and leadership at the University of New Haven and throughout the Greater New Haven community.
Â
Alvine and UNH began a relationship nearly 20 years ago when then-UNH President Larry DeNardis and Alvine first met. He was asked to lead a taskforce that created the first business plan for what became the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. Soon after he was elected to the University's Board of Governors and he served as chair for six years. While in the position, he led the task force that began UNH's transformation from a commuter college to a residential university.
Â
In addition to dedicating many hours to the University, Alvine also has been a generous benefactor. He understands and appreciates the educational value that intercollegiate athletics brings to the campus community and the valuable role athletics plays in the lives of young men and women. He's created a professional enrichment program that encompasses the entire campus, including athletics, and brings well-known leaders in their fields to campus to meet with students. He's also contributed annually to the Chargers Classic, helped UNH's efforts to create "smart" classrooms and established an endowed scholarship. In addition to athletics, he also supports the Lee Institute and the Peterson Library.
Â
A distinguished global business executive, Alvine served as CEO of Uniroyal's billion-dollar Engineered Products and Services Group and president of its Tire and Merchandising Company. He also served as vice president and general manager at the Celanese Corporation. For the past 21 years he has led several private equity and venture capital firms, including two of his own, and he has served on nearly 30 boards of directors. One of his favorite has been at Jackson Laboratory where he's the former chair and current board member with the disease research organization.
Â
In 2000 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University and later this month, Alvine will be honored with the President's Award at New Haven's 32nd Annual Scholarship Ball.
