In the stable of professional baseball players produced by New Haven, no one stands out more than Steve Bedrosian.

A First Team All-America honoree for the Chargers, Bedrosian went 13-3 with three saves to help lead UNH to a third-place finish at the 1978 College World Series. After his one season playing for Head Coach Frank “Porky” Vieira, Bedrosian was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 1978 MLB Draft.

With Atlanta, he was a National League Rookie of the Year before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 1986 season. “Bedrock” went on to win the 1987 NL Cy Young in Philadelphia, posting a league-leading 40 saves and also garnering votes in the MVP race.

After a stop in San Francisco, Bedrosian was dealt to Minnesota, where he made 56 appearances for the Twins en route to winning what is considered one of the greatest World Series ever played, a seven-game series with Atlanta.

He appeared in his 732nd and final major league game in 1995 with Atlanta and later served as a pitching coach in the organization.
