James Allen led the New Haven men’s basketball team in scoring in each of his four seasons on the court, including an average of 22.9 points in 1977-78 which remains ninth best in a single season.

The sharpshooter from Lewes, Del. was the program’s second all-time leading scorer as of his 1987 Hall of Fame induction still stands at seventh on the career ledger with 1,785 points. Allen's name can also still be found in the all-time record for field goals made (3rd, 744), free throw percentage (6th, .792) and assists (9th, 309).

A Second Team All-America performer, Allen also starred for the Chargers’ track team. As a competitor in the long jump, high jump and triple jump, Allen once held three outdoor program records and was an All-Collegiate Track Conference performer in 1977.

Following his UNH career, Allen was drafted by the Boston Celtics as the 90th overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. He later returned to West Haven as an assistant coach for the Chargers.
