Jason Scheets excelled both at the plate and on the mound for the Chargers from 1996-1999.
A Milford native, Jason began his UNH career on a team that advanced to the NCAA Regionals in his freshman year. As a sophomore, Scheets led the team with five home runs and was second in runs batted in with 24 while posting a .356 batting average. On the mound in 1997, he made five appearances including two starts, as he averaged nearly a strike out per inning.
During his junior year, Jason helped the Chargers reach the NCAA College World Series for the 15th time, earning Most Valuable accoaldes at the Northeast Regional, when he defeated Bryant in relief, 6-4 and tossed a complete-game in the championship game, as the Chargers beat UMass Lowell, 5-2. In that same season, he led UNH in extra base hits with 23, including 16 doubles and three home runs. He also closed out the season with seven sacrifice fly's, which remains the most in a single season in a Charger uniform. He also went 6-3 on the mound with a team-leading 3.04 ERA in 56 1/3 innings pitched. Scheets capped off the season batting .356 and knocked in 44 runs.
Jason completed his New Haven career in 1999 dominating opposing pitchers with a career-best .371 batting average, registering 59 hits including a team-leading 18 doubles, which remains the second most in a single season at New Haven.
Scheets also picked up three wins on the mound for the ‘99 Chargers, a season in which he served as a team captain. Jason’s name remians etched throughout the UNH record book today as he is eighth on the career doubles list with 36. He also capped off his career with a .360 batting average, which remained among the top-10 in program history until 2001. Scheets finished his career with nine total wins, while allowing fewer hits than innings pitched.
