Salvatore Punzo

The first shortstop for New Haven baseball, Salvatore Punzo was a four-year starter for Head Coach Frank “Porky” Vieira.

In 1965, he helped lead the team to the postseason for the first time in school history, hitting .321 with 36 hits and 36 runs batted in. As a senior in 1966, Punzo guided New Haven one step farther, advancing to the NAIA World Series after winning 28 games. He hit .310 with 41 hits and 20 RBI in that season.

Punzo finished his New Haven career with 121 hits, 64 RBI, 106 runs scored and 46 stolen bases.
